Getting around Pushkar

Pushkar is reached by rail, and once you are in it, the city is vertical - short distances and steep climbs.

The short version of the city: A sacred lakeside pilgrim town of 52 ghats and hundreds of temples, including a rare Brahma temple, with a busy bazaar and a famous camel fair

✈️ Arriving in Pushkar

The railway station puts Pushkar on the long-distance network - for most travellers arriving by train, the station is the practical city centre entrance, with local transport at the forecourt.

The recommended season shapes the arrival experience: October to March (fair in Nov) is when the city is at its most comfortable.

🚕 Getting around town

Without a metro, app cabs and auto-rickshaws carry the visitor's day: metered or app-priced cabs for comfort, negotiated autos for short hops, buses for the patient.

App cabs remove the fare negotiation entirely - the meter is the app, the route is visible, and payment is cashless if you want it to be. In smaller cities, availability thins late at night.

🚶 Walking the hills

The walking here is short distances and steep climbs - sturdy shoes earn their place, and the views repay every step that the calves complain about.

💡 Local know-how

The practical rhythm in Indian cities: start early, stay central at midday, and keep the last ride of the evening short.

Small denominations solve half of daily transport friction; carry them.

The first-day rule that never fails: a single ride in, a local walk, an early night - the second day, with bearings, is when the city opens up.

🗺️ Orientation

The city reads from above - spend the first hour at a high viewpoint and the geography organises itself; after that, every walk has a direction.

If you arrived by train, the station is usually the practical anchor of the map - the first ride from it sets your bearings, and returning to it is the simplest fallback in any city.

🕐 Planning the day

The proven Indian-city shape: out early, when traffic is kind and light is best; central at midday, near food and shade; back before the evening peak. Distances that take twenty minutes at 8 AM can take an hour at 6 PM.

Cluster the day geographically - one quarter per half-day beats three crossings of the city, and the saves show up as extra sights seen, not just time.

In the October to March (fair in Nov) season, add the weather to the plan - the pleasant months widen the comfortable hours, and the off months concentrate the day into mornings and evenings.

✅ The one-minute checklist

  • Arriving: by train - the station forecourt has the local modes

  • Short hops: autos and app cabs - agree auto fares first or let the app price it

  • Carry small notes for fares and tips

  • On foot: sturdy shoes - the city climbs
