Local tips
Arrive at opening time to beat the queue, especially on weekends between November and February.
Choose the cabin ropeway if you are carrying bags, travelling with young children or it is raining.
Keep your phone on a wrist strap on the open chairlift.
Check whether the chairlift is running before you plan around it; it has had long pauses.
Don't aim to go up just before the lunch break; you may wait at the top.
Remember the cabin ropeway usually closes on the second and fourth Tuesdays.
Walk down the steps if the return queue is long; it takes about half an hour.
Two ways up Ratnagiri
The ropeway carries visitors from the foot of Ratnagiri hill to the Vishwa Shanti Stupa at the top. There are two systems side by side. The older one is a single-seat chairlift: you sit alone on an open chair, with a bar in front, and glide slowly up over the forest. It is slow and quiet, and a small adventure in itself. The newer one is an enclosed cabin ropeway, with cars that take several people at once. It is faster, more comfortable for children and older travellers, and works in light rain.
Hours and closures
Both are run by the Bihar State Tourism Development Corporation. They usually open in the morning, close for a lunch break around midday and stop running in the late afternoon; recent official timings were about 8:30 am to 4:30 pm for the chairlift and about 9:45 am to 4:30 pm for the cabin ropeway. The cabin ropeway is usually closed on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month for maintenance. Longer maintenance breaks also happen, such as in April 2026 before the Malmas Mela, and the chairlift has been out of service at times. Check the BSTDC ropeway page before you go.
Tickets
Tickets are sold at the counter and through the BSTDC website, with separate fares for the two systems. On winter weekends and holidays the queue can take over an hour, so book online or arrive at opening.
Riding the chairlift
Hold your phone and bag securely; there is nowhere to set things down and staff can't stop the line to rescue a dropped item. Sit still and keep your feet up as you reach the top station, where staff help you off. Families with small children are usually better off in the cabin ropeway.
