Local tips
Do not enter the pool for any reason; bathing is banned because of repeated drownings.
Shoot from the top first for the full width, then take the roughly 300 steps down for the front view.
Stop at the chariot-shaped Sun Temple at Bundu, which is on the same highway.
Keep children close near the edge, where barriers are low in places.
Go in the morning, when light falls more evenly across the rock face.
Protect your phone or camera from spray if you visit between August and October.
Buy water and snacks at the entrance stalls, as there is nothing lower down.
A wide fall
Dassam Falls lies near Taimara village in the Bundu area, about 40 km from Ranchi off the highway to Jamshedpur. Here the Kanchi river spreads across a broad rock ledge and drops about 44 metres in several separate streams. The local name, Dassam Ghagh, is often linked to the fall's many channels.
Viewpoints
From the top there is a view across the whole width of the fall. A stairway of roughly 300 steps leads down to a lower viewpoint facing it. That lower view is the classic photograph.
Why you must stay out of the water
Dassam has a long record of drownings. The pool looks calm, but it hides strong undercurrents, and several people have died here over the years, many in the cool, dry months when the water looks gentle. Bathing is banned. Stay behind barriers and do not climb onto the rocks at the edge, however tempting.
When the water runs
From late August to October the fall is loud and throws up heavy spray. In winter it narrows but keeps its shape, and the rock face shows more. In summer it can thin out.
Pair it with
The Sun Temple at Bundu, built as a stone chariot with 18 wheels, is on the same highway. Deori Mandir, the sixteen-armed Durga temple near Tamar, is further along. Together they make a full day from Ranchi. Hire a car — buses run on the highway but not to the falls.
