Best Photo Spots in Ranchi
Ranchi's best photos are an hour's drive out, at the bottom of long stone stairways. The two city hills give you the skyline and the sunsets. Here is how to time each one.

Plan around the steps
Every waterfall here means a descent — about 700 steps at Hundru, 722 at Jonha and around 300 to the lower view at Dassam. The climb back up is what tires people, so start early and carry water. Morning light also falls more evenly into the gorges before the sun gets overhead.
The three falls
Hundru Falls is the tallest, a single long drop of about 98 metres where the Subarnarekha leaves the plateau. It photographs best from the viewing platforms partway down, where you get the whole drop in frame. Jonha Falls is smaller and more enclosed, with forest close around it and a small Buddha shrine at the top of the hill. Dassam Falls is the widest: the Kanchi breaks into several streams across a rock face, which suits a wide lens from the upper viewpoint.
From August to October the water is at its peak and the spray is heavy. Protect your phone or camera, and expect cloudy skies. From December to February the flow drops, the rocks show, and the light is cleaner.
The city hills
Pahari Mandir looks over the whole city from Ranchi Hill. Sunset from the top is the classic frame. Tagore Hill in Morabadi is lower and quieter, with the open pavilion at the summit and rock outcrops that make good foregrounds. Early morning here is calm and cool.
Safety and courtesy
Do not climb onto wet rocks for a better angle. The pools at Dassam in particular have claimed lives, and bathing there is banned. At Pahari Mandir, keep cameras away from people making offerings and do not photograph inside the sanctum. Ask before photographing people in tribal villages, and do not stage anyone in festival dress.
A simple route
Day one: Hundru in the morning, Jonha after lunch. Day two: Dassam early, the Sun Temple at Bundu on the way back, and Pahari Mandir for sunset. Keep Tagore Hill for a quiet dawn.
Questions
Ranchi — FAQ
Which Ranchi waterfall is best for photography?
Hundru for a tall single drop, Dassam for a wide multi-stream fall, and Jonha for a green, enclosed setting. If you can visit only one, Hundru gives the most dramatic frame.
Can I fly a drone at the Ranchi waterfalls?
Drone rules in India require registration and permission in many areas, and the falls see heavy crowds. Check the current rules and ask the site staff before flying.
Is Pahari Mandir good for sunset photos?
Yes. The hilltop faces open sky over the city, and the late light catches the temple walls. Arrive 30–40 minutes early to allow for the climb.
When do the waterfalls look fullest?
From August to October, just after the monsoon. The flow drops through winter and can be thin by April and May.
