Local tips

Visit the Buddha temple on the hill before or after the descent — it is a short walk from the parking area.

Count on 722 steps each way and pace the climb back with short rests.

Keep snacks zipped away, as monkeys around the stairway snatch food.

Go on a weekday morning for the calmest visit and softest light in the gorge.

Pair Jonha with Hundru Falls, as both lie on the same side of Ranchi.

Wear strapped shoes; the last flights near the pool are damp and mossy.

Carry your own water, since nothing is sold at the base.

A quieter fall

Jonha Falls is about 40 km from Ranchi, on the same side of the city as Hundru. It is smaller — around 43 metres — but more enclosed. Forest crowds the gorge, and the fall drops from a hanging valley into a deep, green pool. Many visitors prefer its calmer feel to the busier falls nearby.

Gautamdhara

The falls are also called Gautamdhara. On the hill above stands a temple and ashram to Buddha, built by the Birla family, and the name comes from that shrine. Some visitors stop at the temple first, then take the stairs down.

The steps

A stone stairway of 722 steps runs through the forest to the base. Allow around 20 minutes down and more to come back up, with breaks. The steps are well built but steep in places and slippery near the bottom. There are resting spots along the way.

When to go

The fall runs strongest from August to October. In winter it is thinner but the gorge stays green, and the walk is pleasant in the cool air. In May the flow can drop to a trickle. Weekday mornings are the quietest.

Safety

Stay out of the pool. The water is deep, and rocks near the fall are slick. Monkeys are common near the car park and stairway, so keep food in your bag.

Getting there

Hire a car from Ranchi for the day and combine Jonha with Hundru. Stalls at the top sell tea and snacks. There is little at the base, so carry water.
