Local tips

Climb in the late afternoon so you are at the top for sunset over the city.

Avoid Shravan Mondays and Mahashivratri unless you come for the worship, as queues start before dawn.

Leave shoes at the stand near the temple and keep a small coin ready for it.

Carry water; there are few stalls once you start the climb.

Do not photograph inside the sanctum or people making offerings.

Head down before full dark, as lighting on some flights of steps is poor.

Visit on 15 August or 26 January to see the flag hoisted, but expect heavy crowds.

A temple with a history

Pahari Mandir stands on Ranchi Hill, a rocky outcrop in the middle of the city. The main temple at the top is dedicated to Shiva, with smaller shrines along the climb. Before independence the hill was known for the gallows the British used to execute freedom fighters here.

The flag

On the night of 14 August 1947 a Ranchi freedom fighter raised the tricolour on the hill in memory of those who died. Since then it has been hoisted beside the temple's religious flag on Independence Day and Republic Day. In 2016 a giant flagpole was installed near the top. The pole still stands, but its huge flag has not flown for years.

The climb

About 470 steps lead to the top. It is a steady climb of 15–25 minutes, with benches on the way. From the summit you see the city spread in every direction, and Ranchi Lake near the foot of the hill.

Busy days

Mondays in the month of Shravan (July–August) are the busiest time. Devotees queue from before dawn to pour water on the lingam, and the steps fill up. Mahashivratri draws similar crowds. On ordinary weekdays the hill is quiet, especially in the morning.

Visiting

Remove shoes before the temple. Cover shoulders and knees. Photography inside the sanctum is not appropriate, but the terrace views and the approach are fine. Evenings are cooler and bring the best light. Leave before full dark, as lighting on the steps is patchy.
