Good to know

Local tips

Start the descent by 9 am so the climb back up is done before the midday heat.

Carry at least a litre of water per person, as stalls at the top are basic and there is nothing at the bottom.

Wear shoes with grip; the lowest steps stay wet from spray even in winter.

Stop at the mid-level viewing platforms for the full-height photo rather than going right to the pool.

Keep out of the water after rain, when the current in the pool is strongest.

Avoid weekends in late December and January, when picnic groups fill the car park.

Combine Hundru with Jonha Falls on the same trip, as both are on the Purulia road side of Ranchi.

The fall

Hundru is where the Subarnarekha river drops off the edge of the Ranchi plateau in a single long fall of about 98 metres. It is the tallest of the three waterfalls near the city, about 45 km east of Ranchi off the road to Purulia. At the bottom is a wide rocky pool, and the river continues through a gorge of eroded stone.

Getting down

From the car park a long stairway runs down the side of the gorge — about 700 steps, though counts vary with the route you take. It takes 20–30 minutes down and longer back up. There are viewing platforms partway, which give the best view of the full drop. The last stretch is uneven and wet from spray.

When the water runs

The fall is fullest from late August to October, after the monsoon. Then it is loud, wide and throws spray across the lower steps. Through winter it thins, and by April and May it can shrink to a few strands over bare rock. Winter is the comfortable time to go, and the rock formations at the base are more visible.

Safety

People do wade and bathe in the pool at the base, but currents and hidden rocks make it risky, and more so after rain. Do not go into the water in the monsoon, keep to the paths, and do not climb onto the rocks beside the fall. After heavy rain, staff may close the lower steps.

Making a day of it

Hundru pairs with Jonha Falls, which is on the same side of the city. Getalsud reservoir is on the way and makes a quick stop. Hire a car from Ranchi, carry water and snacks, and start early — the climb back up is easier before midday.
