Local tips

Come at sunrise, when the summit is cool and nearly empty.

Carry water, as there are no stalls on the hill itself.

Look out for Kusumtala on the way up, the spot linked to Jyotirindranath's writing.

Avoid summer afternoons, when the bare rock heats up.

Combine the hill with a walk around Morabadi and a visit to the Ramakrishna ashram at the foot.

Wear shoes with some grip, as the upper rock can be loose and dusty.

Leave before dark; the path has little lighting.

A family retreat

Tagore Hill, also called Morabadi Hill, rises from the north side of Ranchi near Morabadi ground. Jyotirindranath Tagore, elder brother of Rabindranath, settled here in the early 1900s after the death of his wife, Kadambari Devi. He built a house called Shanti Dham on the slope and an open pavilion, the Brahma Mandir, at the summit. He lived here until his death in 1925.

The climb

It is a short walk — about 250 steps — to the top, through rock and scrub. The steps were rebuilt by the state tourism department, and the site is now looked after by a trust. On the way up is Kusumtala, a spot where Jyotirindranath is said to have sat to write and pray.

What you see

The top is a bare rock summit with the pavilion and views across Morabadi and much of the city. It is less dramatic than Pahari Mandir but far calmer. Early mornings are cool, with walkers and few visitors.

At the foot of the hill

The Ramakrishna Mission Ashram and its Divyayan training centre sit on the hill's lower slopes. The Morabadi ground is next door and hosts fairs and events through the year.

Visiting

There are no big facilities here, so carry water. The rock can be hot underfoot on summer afternoons. Treat the pavilion with respect — it is a memorial, not a stage for photos.
