Best time to visit Ranthambore

The best time to visit Ranthambore is from October to March, when the weather is cool and safaris are comfortable. For the best chance of seeing tigers, many wildlife photographers prefer April to June, when the forest dries out and animals gather at the lakes, although the heat is intense.

The core safari zones usually close from July to September for the monsoon, when only some outer zones stay open. The right time for you depends on whether you want comfort, sightings or fewer crowds.

❄️ Winter

Recommended

Oct – Mar

Cool and dry from November to February, warmer in October and March — the most comfortable safari months, with cold dawns in December and January.

Pack: warm layers, a jacket, cap and gloves for dawn safaris in open jeeps, which are far colder than the afternoon.

☀️ Summer

Recommended

Apr – Jun

Very hot, often 40 °C+ by midday, but often the best months for sightings — the forest thins out and animals come to the waterholes. Safaris run early and late.

Pack: light full-sleeve cottons in muted colours, a hat, sunscreen and plenty of water.

🌧️ Monsoon

Jul – Sep

Park closed in monsoon — the one season to skip, as only a few buffer zones, if any, keep running safaris and the forest tracks turn to mud.

Pack: a rain shell and shoes that can take mud, if you come for the buffer zones.

Best Month to Visit Ranthambore

October and November

The core zones reopen, usually on 1 October, and the forest is still green after the rain. Days are warm and mornings get cooler through November. Diwali weeks are busy.

December to February

The coolest and most popular months. Days are pleasant, but dawn safaris are cold in an open vehicle, so pack warm layers. Mist over the lakes gives soft morning light. Christmas and New Year are the busiest weeks.

March

The weather warms up and the forest starts to thin out, which makes animals easier to spot. It is a good balance of comfort and sightings.

April to June

Very hot and dry, often above 40 °C by midday. Water is scarce, so tigers and other animals spend more time near the lakes, and sightings are often good. Take the morning safari if you can, and rest through the afternoon.

July to September

The monsoon season. Core zones 1 to 5 are usually closed, while some outer zones may stay open. The fort and the Trinetra Ganesh temple can still be visited, and the forest turns green. Check which zones are open before you plan a trip.

When Is Ranthambore Most Crowded?

Ranthambore is busiest from late December to early January, over Diwali, and on weekends and long holidays through the winter. Safari permits for the popular zones sell out early at these times.

For a quieter trip, visit in October, February–March or on weekdays, and book your safaris as soon as you know your dates.
