Local tips
Leave Rishikesh early to beat the queues and the heat, especially on Mondays.
Avoid the Kanwar Yatra weeks in Shravan unless you want to join the pilgrimage.
Buy offerings at the stalls by the entrance and keep them simple.
Keep your phone away inside the shrine and take photos from the courtyard.
Carry motion-sickness tablets if you get queasy, as the road has many sharp bends.
Check for landslides and road closures before going in the monsoon.
Wear shoes you can slip off easily, as you will leave them at a stand.
Where Shiva drank the poison
Neelkanth Mahadev is a Shiva temple in the forested hills east of Rishikesh, at around 1,300 m. The story says that when gods and demons churned the ocean, a deadly poison rose first. Shiva drank it and held it in his throat, which turned blue. Neelkanth means the blue-throated one, and this is said to be where it happened.
The temple
The temple tower is built in a southern Indian style, tall and brightly painted with figures from the churning of the ocean. It stands where two small streams meet, between forested ridges. Inside, pilgrims offer water, milk, flowers and bael leaves to the lingam. Queues move steadily on ordinary days.
Getting there
By road it is about 32 km from Rishikesh, usually an hour or more each way on a narrow, winding road through the forest. Shared jeeps and taxis leave from the Swarg Ashram and Laxman Jhula side. Some pilgrims walk the old forest footpath from the Swarg Ashram side, a steep trek that takes most of a day there and back.
Shravan and the Kanwar Yatra
In Shravan, in July and August, Kanwar pilgrims carry Ganga water from Haridwar and walk here to pour it on the lingam. For weeks, the road is a slow procession, vehicles are diverted, and a normal drive is not possible on peak days. Mahashivratri, in February or March, is also very busy. Mondays are busier than other weekdays through the year.
Monsoon
The monsoon falls in the same months as the Kanwar Yatra. Landslides can block the road, so check conditions before you set out.
Visiting
Dress modestly and remove your shoes before the temple. Leather is best left behind. Photography is usually not allowed inside the shrine, so take your photos of the tower from the courtyard and the approach. Small stalls sell offerings, tea and snacks.
