Best time to visit Sanchi

The best time to visit Sanchi is from October to March, when days are warm and sunny and mornings are cool enough to explore the hilltop in comfort. December and January are the coolest months, with chilly early mornings and nights.

From April to June Sanchi is very hot, often above 40 °C in the afternoon, so plan to reach the monuments when they open. The monsoon, from July to September, turns the hill and the fields green but brings heavy showers and slippery stone paths.

Best Month to Visit Sanchi

October and November

The rains have ended, the countryside is still green and the days are clear and warm. On the last weekend of November, the Chetiyagiri Vihara festival brings monks and pilgrims from across India and from countries such as Sri Lanka, Japan and Thailand. See festivals in Sanchi for details.

December to February

The coolest and most comfortable months, and the busiest. Days are pleasant and sunny, while early mornings and nights can drop to around 10 °C, so carry a warm layer for sunrise at the stupas.

March

Days warm up quickly, but mornings are still pleasant and the hill is quieter than in winter. Holi usually falls in March.

April to June

The hottest months, with May afternoons often above 40 °C. Visit at opening time, rest through the middle of the day and go back out in the late afternoon. Visitor numbers are usually low.

July to September

The monsoon usually arrives in late June, and July and August are the wettest months, with heavy showers between dry spells. The hill is at its greenest, but the paths get slippery, so carry an umbrella and wear shoes with a good grip.

When Is Sanchi Most Crowded?

Sanchi is busiest from November to February, especially on weekends and public holidays. The biggest crowds come on the last weekend of November, during the Chetiyagiri Vihara festival, when rooms in Sanchi fill up.
