About the Great Stupa
The Great Stupa, also called Stupa No. 1, is the heart of Sanchi and one of the oldest stone structures in India. Emperor Ashoka began it in the 3rd century BCE as a smaller brick dome, said to be built over relics of the Buddha. In the 2nd century BCE it was enlarged to almost twice its size and cased in stone, and around the 1st century BCE the four carved gateways, the toranas, were added.
The dome is about 16.5 m high and 36.6 m across, topped by a small square railing and a triple stone umbrella. A stone railing surrounds it, with a path for walking around the stupa. After centuries of neglect, the site was rediscovered by a British officer in 1818 and restored under Sir John Marshall between 1912 and 1919. The Ashoka Pillar, Temple 17 and Stupa 3 are all a short walk away.
