About the Sanchi Archaeological Museum
The Sanchi Archaeological Museum is run by the Archaeological Survey of India and holds the finds from the Sanchi hill and a few nearby sites. It began in 1919 as a small museum on the hilltop, set up by Sir John Marshall, who led the restoration of the monuments. In 1966 the collection moved to its present building at the foot of the hill, near the ticket office.
The highlight is the lion capital from the Ashoka Pillar, with the mirror-like polish of Mauryan stonework, displayed at the back of the main hall. The main hall and four galleries also hold a Satavahana-period yakshi, large Bodhisattva and Buddha images and a serpent king (Nagaraja). The collection spans the 3rd century BCE to the 12th century CE. The museum is closed on Fridays.
