What to Wear in Shillong

Shillong is never hot, but it is often wet. Dress for cool air, sudden rain and steep, slippery paths, and add a warm layer for the evening all year round.

Cool all year, cold in winter

Shillong sits at about 1,500 metres, so even in May the evenings are cool. From December to February, nights can drop to around 5°C and many homes and guesthouses have no central heating. Pack a fleece or sweater and a warm jacket for winter, and a light jacket for the rest of the year.

Rain gear from June

The monsoon usually arrives in June and rain often continues into October. A light umbrella is not enough on the hills. Bring a hooded rain jacket, quick-dry trousers, and a spare pair of socks. Jeans stay wet for days in the damp air.

Shoes for steps and mud

Elephant Falls, Laitlum and the root-bridge trails near Cherrapunji all involve wet stone steps. Wear trainers or walking shoes with a real grip, not fashion sneakers or sandals. If you plan the Nongriat walk, choose shoes you are happy to get muddy.

Church, villages and festivals

Shillong is relaxed about everyday clothes, and young people dress in jeans, boots and layers. For church services, dress neatly and cover shoulders. In villages and at festival grounds, modest clothes are the respectful choice. Remove your shoes where you see others doing so.

The jainsem

The jainsem is the traditional dress of Khasi women: two lengths of cloth pinned at the shoulders and falling straight to the ankle, often in checked or plain fabric. On festival days it is worn in silk with a dhara wrap and gold jewellery. Men's festival dress includes the jymphong, a sleeveless coat. Visitors can buy a jainsem in the Police Bazaar shops and wear it respectfully.

Where to shop

Police Bazaar is the main place for warm clothes, rain jackets and shawls. Laitumkhrah has smaller shops and cafés.

Questions

Shillong — FAQ

Is Shillong cold in December?

Yes, especially at night. Days are often bright and mild, but nights can drop to around 5°C by January. A warm jacket and a sweater are enough; you do not need snow gear.

Do I need a raincoat in October?

Usually, yes. The heaviest rain is from June to September, but showers often continue into October. A light hooded jacket is more useful than an umbrella on the hills.

Can visitors wear the Khasi jainsem?

Yes. Visitors often buy a jainsem in Police Bazaar. Wear it neatly and with respect, and save silk festival jainsems and gold ornaments for the occasions they are meant for.

What shoes should I bring to Shillong?

Walking shoes or trainers with a strong grip. Waterfall steps and hill paths are wet and slippery for much of the year, and some trails near Cherrapunji are steep.
