Best time to visit Shimla

The best time to visit Shimla is from March to June, when the weather is mild and pleasant for sightseeing. If you want to see snow, visit between December and February, when Shimla and nearby Kufri are cold and snowfall is most likely.

The monsoon months from July to September bring heavy rain, and landslides can block roads, so it is the least reliable time to plan a trip. The right season for you depends on whether you want pleasant weather, snow or fewer crowds.

Best Month to Visit Shimla

March and April

The weather warms up, the skies are often clear and the crowds are smaller than in peak summer. A great time for sightseeing and mountain views.

May and June

This is peak season, as visitors come to escape the heat of the plains. The weather is pleasant, but hotels, roads and Mall Road are at their busiest.

July to September

The monsoon brings green hills and mist, but also heavy rain, slippery paths and a risk of landslides on mountain roads. Check road and weather updates before travelling.

October and November

The rain clears, the air is crisp and the views are often excellent. Evenings get cold, so pack warm layers.

December to February

These are the coldest months and the best time for snow, especially at Kufri. Pack heavy winter clothing, and be prepared for icy roads and occasional travel delays after heavy snowfall.

When Is Shimla Most Crowded?

Shimla is busiest from May to June, during long weekends and around Christmas and New Year, when many visitors come hoping for snow. Hotels fill quickly and traffic into the town can be slow.

For a quieter trip, visit in March–April or October–November, and plan sightseeing early in the day.
