Shimla

The Queen of Hill Stations — the summer capital of the British Raj, a ridge of colonial timber architecture, pine forests and Himalayan views.

Shimla keeps its colonial charm alongside Himachali Pahari culture — Kullu shawls and caps, apple orchards, and a hearty hill cuisine like siddu and dham.

About Shimla

Shimla, the capital of Himachal Pradesh, sits at about 2,200 m on a ridge in the lower Himalayas. It was the summer capital of British India, and that history still shapes the town: the Ridge, Christ Church, the Viceregal Lodge and the old timber-framed buildings along Mall Road all date from those years.

The town centre is closed to most traffic, so Shimla is best explored on foot. Spend a morning at Jakhoo Temple, an afternoon on Mall Road and Lakkar Bazaar, and the evening on the Ridge as the lights come on across the hills. Add a day trip to Kufri for snow in winter or mountain views in summer, and leave room for Himachali food like siddu, madra and a full dham meal.

Questions

Shimla — FAQ

What is Shimla famous for?

Shimla is famous for its colonial architecture, the Ridge and Mall Road, Christ Church, Jakhoo Temple and views of the Himalayas. It was the summer capital of British India and is also known for the Kalka–Shimla toy train, apple orchards and Himachali food.

How many days are enough for Shimla?

2–3 days is enough for the Ridge, Mall Road, Jakhoo Temple, Christ Church and the Viceregal Lodge. Add a day if you want a trip out to Kufri, Chail or Naldehra.

What is the best time to visit Shimla?

March to June is the most comfortable time, with mild days and clear views. December to February is cold and is when snow is most likely, while July to September brings heavy rain and a risk of landslides. See the best time to visit Shimla for a season-by-season guide.

How do I reach Shimla?

Most visitors travel via Chandigarh, about 115 km away, and continue by road. The Kalka–Shimla toy train, a UNESCO World Heritage railway, is slower but makes the journey part of the trip. Shimla also has a small airport, though flights are limited and depend on the weather.

Is Shimla cold?

Evenings are cool even in summer, so carry a light jacket. From December to February temperatures can drop close to freezing, so pack warm layers and shoes with good grip for icy slopes.
