Local tips
Book darshan passes only on online.sai.org.in or at the trust's counters, and ignore third parties selling faster-darshan.
Leave your phone in your room if you can, because the deposit counters opposite the temple have their own queue.
Carry the same photo ID you used to book, as it is checked with the pass.
Aim for a weekday outside Thursday, early in the morning or after about 9 pm, for the shortest queue.
Book Kakad Aarti passes ahead, since they are limited and the dawn aarti is the calmest of the day.
Keep your hands free in the queue, as bags are searched and food and water bottles are refused.
Collect your free Prasadalaya meal token after darshan instead of queuing for one later.
The shrine over the tomb
The Samadhi Mandir is the reason Shirdi exists as a pilgrim town. It began as the Buti Wada, a stone mansion built by the Nagpur devotee Gopalrao Buti, and Sai Baba was buried there after he died on 15 October 1918. The white marble statue of Baba, seated with one leg over the other, sits above the tomb. It is dressed and garlanded afresh through the day. The temple trust, the Shri Saibaba Sansthan, runs the complex, its free kitchen and a hospital.
How a visit works
Darshan runs on passes, free or paid, booked at online.sai.org.in or at counters in town. Carry the ID you booked with. Before you queue, leave your phone, camera, electronics, water bottle and shoes at the deposit counters opposite the temple or in your room, because none of them are allowed inside. Queues wind through covered halls before you reach the statue, and on busy days you may get only a few seconds in front of it.
The daily programme
The trust's timetable shows the temple opening at about 4:45 am, the Kakad Aarti at about 5:15 am and the Mangal Snaan, Baba's morning bath, at about 5:50 am. Darshan starts at about 6:25 am. The midday aarti is at noon, the Dhoop Aarti at sunset and the Shej Aarti, when Baba is put to rest, at about 10 pm. Aarti passes are limited and can sell out, so book them early.
After darshan
Collect your free meal token and walk to the Prasadalaya. Then visit Dwarkamai and the Chavadi, and Gurusthan and Lendi Baug inside the complex. For photos, step outside the gates; the gilded dome shows above the walls from parts of the surrounding road.
