Local tips

Visit outside July and August for a quiet meadow without the pilgrim camp.

Register with the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board well ahead if you plan to walk to the cave.

Carry your Yatra registration and health certificate for every checkpoint.

Combine Baltal with Zoji La on one trip by local taxi from Sonamarg.

Check highway timings, as traffic is regulated around pilgrim convoys.

Carry food and water outside the Yatra weeks, as facilities are few.

Do not photograph security posts or checkpoints.

A meadow at the foot of the pass

Baltal is a meadow about 15 km beyond Sonamarg, at around 2,800 m, where the Sindh valley ends beneath the cliffs of Zoji La. The highway turns here to climb the pass, and a side route heads south-east towards the Amarnath cave. For most of the year it is a quiet, open valley floor ringed by steep mountains.

The Yatra base camp

In July and August, Baltal becomes the base camp for the shorter Amarnath Yatra route. It is about 14 km from Baltal to the cave, via Domail, Brarimarg and Sangam, and fit pilgrims walk up and back in a single long day. Rows of tents, langar kitchens, medical posts and pony and palanquin stands fill the meadow. The 2026 pilgrimage season ran from 3 July to 28 August.

Access during the Yatra

During the Yatra, security around Baltal is tight. The camp is organised for registered pilgrims, and entry is controlled through checkpoints. Each pilgrim needs advance registration with the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board and carry a compulsory health certificate. Highway traffic, including trips to Zoji La, may be regulated to fit around pilgrim convoys.

Outside the Yatra

Before and after the pilgrimage season, Baltal is a scenic stop on the way to Zoji La, with the river, meadow and cliffs around it. It is usually visited on the same trip as the pass by local taxi from Sonamarg. Facilities are limited out of season.

When to go

The meadow is accessible from spring to autumn, depending on snow and on the state of the highway. In winter, heavy snow and avalanche risk make it unsafe without local advice.
