Sonamarg

The 'meadow of gold' — a high Himalayan valley of glaciers, alpine lakes and the Sindh river, the last major stop before the Zoji La pass to Ladakh and a great trekking base.

Sonamarg is glacier-and-meadow Kashmir: the Thajiwas glacier, the golden meadows and Sindh river, the dramatic Zoji La pass, the Kashmir Great Lakes trek, and Wazwan and kahwa.

The last valley before Ladakh

Sonamarg sits at about 2,700 m in the Sindh valley, roughly 80 km north-east of Srinagar on the highway to Ladakh. The name means meadow of gold. It is less a town than a string of hotels, dhabas and pony stands along the road, set between broad meadows, the fast grey-green Sindh river, and steep slopes of pine and birch leading up to glaciers. Beyond it the road climbs to Baltal and over the Zoji La pass into Ladakh.

Year-round access, with limits

Until recently, Sonamarg was cut off for much of the winter. Since January 2025, the 6.5 km Z-Morh tunnel, also called the Sonamarg tunnel, has kept the road from Gagangir to Sonamarg open in all weather. That makes Sonamarg itself reachable in winter. It does not help with Zoji La, which is further on and still closes in heavy snow; a separate tunnel under the pass is being built.

What to do

The classic outing is the Thajiwas Glacier, about 3 km from the main road by pony or on foot, where snow lies in the gullies even in summer. It was closed after April 2025 and reopened in February 2026. The Sonamarg Meadows along the Sindh are for walking and simply looking. A drive to Zoji La, when open, shows the dramatic switch from green Kashmir to bare Ladakhi mountains.

Treks and the pilgrimage

Sonamarg is the start of the Kashmir Great Lakes trek, a seven to eight day route that passes Vishansar Lake and ends at Naranag. It is a proper high-altitude trek, not a drive. In July and August, Baltal, about 15 km on, becomes the base camp for the shorter Amarnath Yatra route. In 2026 the Yatra ran from 3 July to 28 August, bringing heavy security and convoy timings to the highway.

Getting around

Taxis from Srinagar take about two and a half to three hours. For Thajiwas, ponies are hired through the local union at fixed rates. Trips to Zoji La and Zero Point beyond it are usually made in local taxis from Sonamarg.

When to go

May to October is the main season. The best time to visit page covers each month, including winter since the tunnel.

Questions

Sonamarg — FAQ

Can I visit Sonamarg in winter now?

Yes. Since the Z-Morh tunnel opened in January 2025, the road to Sonamarg stays open in winter, weather permitting. Many hotels still close, and Zoji La beyond is usually shut in heavy snow.

Is Thajiwas Glacier open?

Yes. It was closed after April 2025 and reopened to visitors in February 2026. Check locally, as access decisions can change.

How far is Sonamarg from Srinagar?

About 80 km, usually two and a half to three hours by road through Ganderbal and Kangan.

Does the Z-Morh tunnel go under Zoji La?

No. It connects Gagangir and Sonamarg. A separate tunnel under Zoji La is still being built.

Is Sonamarg a good base for the Amarnath Yatra?

Yes, for the shorter Baltal route. Baltal is about 15 km beyond Sonamarg, and many pilgrims stay in Sonamarg before or after the walk.
