Summer: May to September

Days in the meadows can be pleasant in the sun, but mornings and evenings are cold, and the wind off the glaciers is sharp. Wear a thermal or long-sleeved base, a fleece and a light down or insulated jacket, and carry a waterproof shell. A warm hat and gloves take up little space and you will want them at Thajiwas and Zoji La. Sunscreen and sunglasses are essential, as the sun is strong at this height.

For the glacier

The snow at Thajiwas is packed and slippery. Wear waterproof boots or shoes with deep grip. Gumboots and long coats are rented near the pony stands, which is useful if you have only trainers. Check the fit before paying. Do not climb onto snow bridges or into ice caves, which can collapse.

For Zoji La

The top of the pass is colder and windier than Sonamarg, and weather can change to snow within an hour. Add a warm jacket and gloves even on a sunny summer day.

For trekking

The Kashmir Great Lakes trek crosses passes above 4,000 m. You need proper trek boots, a layered system including a down jacket, rain gear, a warm hat and gloves, and a sleeping bag rated for below freezing. Trek operators provide a kit list; follow it.

For the Yatra

Pilgrims on the Baltal route should carry warm woollens, a waterproof jacket, gloves, sturdy trekking shoes and a torch, as the shrine board advises. Weather near the cave can turn to snow in July.

Winter

Since the tunnel opened, visitors come to Sonamarg in winter for the snow. You will need thermals, a heavy jacket, waterproof trousers, snow boots, a warm hat and gloves.

Local wear

Loose, modest clothes suit Kashmir. A woollen pheran bought in Srinagar makes a warm, practical evening layer.
