Local tips

Walk a little away from the road for quieter meadows and better views.

Go in September or October to see the gold that gives Sonamarg its name.

Agree pony routes and prices before starting.

Raft only with registered operators and wear the safety gear provided.

Stay out of the Sindh; the current is strong and the water glacier-cold.

Carry your litter back, as bins are few on the meadows.

Come early in the day, before day-trippers arrive from Srinagar.

The meadow of gold

Sonamarg takes its name from these meadows: sona for gold, marg for meadow. They stretch along both sides of the Sindh river, broad grassy flats between the road and the forested slopes, with snow peaks at the head of every side valley. In early summer they are green and dotted with wildflowers; by September and October the grass dries to the gold that gives the place its name.

What to do

The meadows are for walking, sitting and looking. Paths run along the river and up towards the forest edge, and there is space to spread out even in the busy season. Shepherd families bring their flocks through on the way to higher pastures in early summer. Pony owners offer short rides; agree the route and price first.

The Sindh river

The Sindh runs fast and cold beside the meadows. White-water rafting is offered on stretches of it in season, usually from late spring. Use a registered operator, wear the life jacket and helmet provided, and follow the guide. Do not wade into the river; the current is strong even where the water looks calm.

When to go

The meadows are green from late May to August, golden in September and October, and under snow in winter, when the Z-Morh tunnel now keeps the road open. Morning is best: the air is clear and the valley quiet before the day-trippers arrive from Srinagar.

Good to know

Litter is a problem in the busiest weeks, especially around the road. Carry yours back. During the Amarnath Yatra, the road beside the meadows carries heavy pilgrim and security traffic.
