Local tips

Agree the route, drop point and price with the pony union before setting off.

Walk if you are fit; the path is gentle and takes about an hour each way.

Rent gumboots near the pony stands if you only have trainers.

Never walk onto snow bridges or into ice caves; they can collapse.

Go early in the morning, before the snowfield gets crowded.

Carry sunglasses, as snow glare is strong even on cloudy days.

Check locally that the site is open, as access was closed for part of 2025.

Snow in summer

The Thajiwas Glacier lies in a side valley above Sonamarg, about 3 km from the main road. A path climbs gently through meadows and forest to a bowl ringed by peaks, where snowfields and the tongue of the glacier fill the gullies even in midsummer. It is the most popular outing from Sonamarg and the easiest place in Kashmir to touch snow in July.

Access now

Thajiwas was among the many Kashmir sites closed after the April 2025 attack at Baisaran. It reopened to visitors in February 2026, along with Hung Park nearby, after a security review. Check locally before you go, as decisions can change.

Getting there

You can walk the route in about an hour each way at an easy pace, or hire a pony. Pony rides are arranged through the local union at fixed rates; agree the route, the drop point and the price before setting off, and pay at the end. Sledge pullers on the snow offer rides down the slopes for a fee.

On the snow

The snowfield is packed and slippery, and the lower end melts from beneath in summer, leaving hollow snow bridges over streams. Do not walk onto snow bridges or enter ice caves, which can collapse without warning. Keep to the areas where others are walking. Wear shoes with grip; gumboots can be rented near the pony stands.

When to go

The path is usually clear from May to October. Snow is most extensive in May and June. In winter the valley is deep in snow and not safe to enter without local advice.

Good to know

Go early: by late morning the snowfield is crowded and the light is flat. Tea stalls near the snow serve Maggi and kahwa.
