Local tips
Check the Srinagar to Leh highway status the evening before and again in the morning.
Start early, as traffic and one-way timings build through the day.
Hire a local taxi from Sonamarg for the trip to Zoji La and Zero Point.
Stop for photos only at wide pull-offs, never on narrow switchbacks.
Do not photograph army posts or convoys.
Carry warm clothes; the top is far colder and windier than Sonamarg.
Eat in Sonamarg first, as food beyond is scarce and seasonal.
The gateway to Ladakh
Zoji La is a mountain pass at about 3,528 m on the Srinagar to Leh highway, beyond Sonamarg and Baltal. The road climbs from Baltal in a series of narrow, unpaved switchbacks cut into cliffs, then crosses a bleak saddle where the green of Kashmir gives way to the bare brown mountains of Ladakh. Zero Point, a snowfield just beyond the pass on the Ladakh side, is where most day-trippers from Sonamarg turn around.
Winter closure
Heavy snow normally closes Zoji La for part of every winter, and the Border Roads Organisation clears it each spring. The length of the closure varies: in 2025 the pass reopened on 1 April after its shortest-ever closure of 33 days, while in the 2025–26 winter it was kept open longer than ever before closing in late winter, and an avalanche on 26 April 2026 shut it for several days. Always check the highway status before setting out.
The tunnels
The Z-Morh tunnel, opened in January 2025, runs from Gagangir to Sonamarg and keeps Sonamarg reachable in winter. It does not bypass Zoji La. A much longer tunnel under the pass itself is being built, and until it opens the pass remains a seasonal road.
Travelling the road
The road is narrow and single-lane in places, with sheer drops and one-way timings at busy periods. Traffic, including army convoys and trucks, is regulated, and during the Amarnath Yatra movement may be restricted further. Sightseeing trips from Sonamarg are usually made in local taxis. Altitude and cold at the top can affect some people.
Photographs
Stop only at wide pull-offs, not on the switchbacks. Do not photograph army installations or convoys.
