Best time to visit Spiti Valley

The best time to visit Spiti Valley is from June to September, when the days are mild, the high roads are open and Chandratal is reachable. This is the only time you can drive the full loop from Shimla through Kinnaur to Kaza and back out over the Kunzum Pass to Manali.

Spiti lies in the rain shadow of the Himalayas, so it gets little of the monsoon rain that soaks the rest of Himachal. The roads that lead to it are a different story, and landslides in Kinnaur and on the Manali side can cause delays. Winter is very cold and only the Shimla route stays open.

❄️ Winter

Oct – Mar

Cold, with snow on the higher ground and some high passes and roads closed — beautiful, but pack and plan for it.

Pack: heavy insulated layers, gloves, a warm hat and waterproof boots.

☀️ Summer

Apr – Jun

The prime window — comfortable days and the higher roads open again, though pre-monsoon haze can hide the far peaks by May and June.

Pack: light layers by day and a warm jacket for cool evenings and altitude.

Best Month to Visit Spiti Valley

May

The Shimla–Kinnaur route is open, but the Kunzum Pass usually opens only around late May or June after snow clearance. Nights are cold and some homestays and cafés are still closing up from winter.

June

Once the Kunzum Pass opens, both routes are usually open. Days are pleasant and the snow is melting on the peaks. A good time for monasteries, villages and Chandratal.

July and August

This is the busiest season. Spiti itself stays mostly dry, but monsoon rain on the approach roads can cause landslides and swollen streams. Check road updates each day and keep a spare day in your plan.

September and early October

The rain is gone, the sky is clear and there are fewer visitors. Nights turn very cold, and the Kunzum Pass often closes around mid-October, sometimes earlier after snow.

November to April

Winter brings heavy snow and temperatures far below freezing. Only the Shimla–Kinnaur route stays open, and even that can close after heavy snowfall. Many guesthouses and cafés shut. Travel only with a local operator and proper cold-weather gear.

When Is Spiti Valley Most Crowded?

Spiti is busiest from late June to August, and over long weekends, when bikers and road-trippers fill Kaza. Homestays book up, and Chandratal gets busy.

For a quieter trip, go in early June or in September, and see what to pack for Spiti Valley before you go.
