Best time to visit Srinagar

Srinagar changes completely with the season. The best month depends on whether you want flowers, day trips into the mountains, autumn colour or snow.

❄️ Winter

Oct – Mar

Cold, with snow on the higher ground and some high passes and roads closed — beautiful, but pack and plan for it.

Pack: heavy insulated layers, gloves, a warm hat and waterproof boots.

☀️ Summer

Recommended

Apr – Jun

The prime window — comfortable days and the higher roads open again, though pre-monsoon haze can hide the far peaks by May and June.

Pack: light layers by day and a warm jacket for cool evenings and altitude.

🌧️ Monsoon

Recommended

Jul – Sep

Warm days and the valley's busiest months — the monsoon reaches Kashmir only weakly, with occasional showers and afternoon thunderstorms; mornings and the higher valleys stay cool.

Pack: light layers by day, a warm jacket for evenings and higher valleys, and a light rain shell.

Shines now: Dal Lake, Nishat Bagh

Spring: March to May

Spring is Srinagar's most famous season. Almond trees blossom first, in March, followed by the tulip garden, which opens for only a few weeks depending on the weather. In 2026 it opened on 16 March and closed on 16 April. Mughal gardens fill with flowerbeds by April and May. Spring is also the rainiest part of the year, so pack a waterproof and keep plans flexible.

Summer: June to August

Summer days are warm, sometimes above 30°C, and evenings are pleasant. This is the season for day trips: Gulmarg's meadows, Pahalgam's river valleys and Sonamarg's glaciers are all green and reachable. July and August also bring the Amarnath Yatra, which means heavy security on the highways towards Pahalgam and Sonamarg and scheduled convoy timings. Kashmir sits largely beyond the reach of the plains' monsoon, so rain comes in showers rather than weeks of downpour.

Autumn: September to November

Autumn is clear, dry and quieter. The chinar trees turn from green to red and gold from late October, and Nishat Bagh and the lakeside roads are at their best. Saffron fields at Pampore, on the road south, flower around late October and early November. Mornings get cold by November.

Winter: December to February

Winter is cold and grey, with occasional snow in the city and fog over the lake. Chillai Kalan, the harshest 40 days, runs from 21 December to 31 January, and the edges of Dal Lake can freeze. Hotels are cheaper and the city is quiet; combine it with Gulmarg for skiing and snow.

So when should you go?

For flowers, go from late March to April. For mountain day trips, go from late May to September, avoiding the Yatra weeks if you want quieter roads. For colour and clear skies, go in the last week of October or early November. See what's on for dated events.
