Local tips

Check the official shikara rate board at the ghat and agree the route and time before you step in.

Ask for a pre-dawn pickup the night before if you want to see the floating vegetable market.

Choose a houseboat in Nigeen if you want a quieter stay than the busy Boulevard side.

Carry cash in small notes for boat vendors and tips.

Visit the lotus beds in July and August, when the flowers are open.

Wear a hat and gloves for dawn rides outside summer, as the water is cold.

Say no firmly but politely to floating sellers if you are not buying; they will move on.

The lake at the heart of Srinagar

Dal Lake covers a large basin on the city's eastern side, backed by the Zabarwan hills and divided by causeways into smaller parts, including Gagribal, Lokut Dal and Bod Dal. It is a working lake as much as a sight. Families live on it, farm floating gardens of vegetables, and move everything by boat, from fresh bread to school children.

Shikaras and houseboats

A shikara is the canopied wooden boat you hire at the numbered ghats along Boulevard Road. Rates are fixed by the tourism department and displayed at the ghats; agree the route and duration before you set off. A one-hour ride covers the nearby houseboats; a longer one can take in Char Chinari island, the Nehru Park area and the lotus beds, which flower in high summer. Houseboats are moored mostly along the Boulevard side and in the quieter Nigeen area to the north. They are made of cedar and range from simple to grand.

The floating market

Before sunrise, vegetable growers gather their boats near Mir Behari in the interior of the lake to trade. It is small and brief, usually wrapped up within an hour or two of first light. Ask your shikara owner for a pre-dawn pickup the night before.

Things to know

Vendors on boats will come alongside to sell saffron, jewellery and snacks. A polite no is enough. The lake is shallow and weedy in places, and swimming is not a good idea. In winter, the edges sometimes freeze during Chillai Kalan.
