Good to know

Local tips

Avoid Friday midday prayers, when the mosque is full and visitors are not expected.

Carry a scarf; women should cover their heads before entering.

Ask at the gate about photography before raising a camera; inside is restricted.

Go in the morning, when the courtyard is quiet and the light through the pillars is soft.

Wear shoes you can slip off, as they are removed at the entrance.

Walk the Nowhatta lanes afterwards for bakeries and copperware.

Check local news before visiting on a sensitive date, as the mosque is occasionally closed.

The great mosque of Nowhatta

Srinagar's Jama Masjid stands in Nowhatta, in the heart of the old city. It was first built by Sultan Sikandar at the end of the 14th century and has been rebuilt more than once after fires, keeping its original plan. Four gateways, each topped with a pagoda-like wooden spire, open onto a large square courtyard with a garden and a pool in the middle.

The wooden halls

The halls around the courtyard are held up by more than 370 pillars, each cut from a single deodar trunk. Walking through them in the quiet light is the main reason to visit. The building can hold tens of thousands of worshippers, and on Fridays and at Eid it is full.

Visiting respectfully

Visitors are welcome outside prayer times. Avoid Friday midday and the five daily prayers. Women should cover their head, arms and legs, and should follow the caretakers' guidance on which areas to use; separate spaces are kept for men and women. Shoes come off at the entrance. Since late 2022 the mosque committee has restricted photography inside, so ask at the gate and be ready to put the camera away. The mosque has sometimes been closed at short notice on sensitive days, so check locally if you are going on a specific date.

Around the mosque

The streets of Nowhatta and the surrounding old city are among the most interesting in Srinagar: traditional bakers, copper shops and spice stalls. Khanqah-e-Moula on the Jhelum is a short drive away.
