What's on in Tawang

Tawang's calendar is Buddhist and Monpa, set by the Tibetan lunar calendar, so dates move each year. The big three for visitors are Torgya, Losar and the autumn Tawang Festival.

Nothing dated is confirmed for Tawang right now, so here is the year instead — the fixtures that come round annually, and what each one means for a visit.

The year in Tawang

Tawang's calendar runs through most of the year, with the busiest weeks in the clear, comfortable months and a quieter stretch in the heaviest rain. Broadly, Oct – Mar and Apr – Jun is when visiting is most comfortable here, and that is when the calendar is busiest — which also means accommodation is most expensive and books furthest ahead.

Most of these follow lunar calendars and move by weeks from year to year, so treat the windows below as the season rather than the date, and confirm the year’s dates before you book around one.

Signature to Tawang

Torgya and Losar

🗓️ January–March

Masked cham dance at Tawang monastery, the largest in India after Lhasa.

Planning: The Sela Tunnel keeps the road open through winter, though the old pass road can still close with snow; dates follow the lunar calendar.

Across Arunachal Pradesh

Losar

🗓️ February–March

The Monpa new year, with prayers and masked dances at the monasteries.

Planning: Dates follow the lunar calendar; an Inner Line Permit is needed either way.

Nationwide

Diwali

🗓️ October–November

The biggest holiday of the year — lamps, sweets, fireworks and a week of visiting family. Cities are lit up and markets stay open late.

Holi

🗓️ March

Coloured powder and water, thrown at anyone within reach, mostly through the morning.

Navratri and Dussehra

🗓️ September–October

Nine nights of fasting, music and dance, ending with Dussehra. What it looks like changes completely by region — garba in Gujarat, pandals in Bengal, processions in the south.

Eid al-Fitr

🗓️ shifts ~11 days earlier each year

The end of Ramadan. The old quarters of Delhi, Hyderabad, Lucknow and Bhopal are at their best in the evenings through the preceding month, when food streets run past midnight.

Makar Sankranti and Pongal

🗓️ mid-January

The harvest turn, marked with kites in the west and north and four days of Pongal in Tamil Nadu.

Torgya (usually January)

Torgya is held only at the Tawang Monastery. Over three days, monks in masks and brocade costumes perform cham dances in the courtyard to drive away evil and protect the year ahead. Crowds of Monpa families come from the villages in their best clothes. It is cold, crowded and deeply atmospheric. Dates follow the lunar calendar, so confirm them with the monastery or the district tourism office before booking.

Losar (usually February or March)

Losar is the Monpa new year. Homes are cleaned and decorated, prayer flags are replaced and families visit each other with butter tea and food. Monasteries hold prayers, and some of the celebration is private and family-centred. As a visitor you will see the town at its most festive, with markets busy in the days before.

Tawang Festival (usually late October or early November)

A newer event started to showcase the district, with Monpa dance, music, food and craft stalls, sometimes alongside adventure activities. It comes in one of the clearest weeks of the year, which makes it a good time for a first visit. Rooms fill quickly.

Other things you may notice

Smaller gompas hold their own prayer days and dances through the year, and the monastery sometimes hosts larger ceremonies at long intervals. The national holidays shown on generic calendars, such as Holi and Diwali, are not big events in Tawang.

Tips for festival days

  • Arrive early for a spot in the courtyard at Torgya; it fills quickly.
  • Ask before photographing dancers up close, and never walk across the dance ground.
  • Dress warmly; you may stand for hours in the cold.
  • Book rooms and your permit well ahead.
