Local tips

Arrive for the early-morning prayers to hear the monks chant in the main hall.

Take your shoes off before the prayer hall and wear thick socks, as the floor is cold.

Walk clockwise around the prayer hall, stupas and prayer wheels.

Look for signs or ask a monk before taking photos inside the hall or museum.

Leave time for the museum, which holds old manuscripts, masks and thangkas.

Take a taxi up and walk down through the town to save your legs at this altitude.

Shoot the full complex from the road across the valley on your way into town.

India's largest monastery

The Tawang Monastery stretches along a ridge above the town, a walled complex of monks' quarters, a school, a library and a large prayer hall with a golden roof. It was founded in 1680–81 by Merak Lama Lodre Gyatso, following the wish of the Fifth Dalai Lama, and belongs to the Gelug school. Locally it is called Gaden Namgyal Lhatse. Several hundred monks live here.

What to see

The prayer hall (dukhang) holds a gilded Buddha several metres tall, rising through the building. Murals cover the walls. The museum keeps old manuscripts, thangka paintings, masks and ritual objects, some centuries old. The library holds scriptures wrapped in cloth. Out in the courtyard, young monks run between classes, and in winter this is where the Torgya dances happen.

Getting the photograph

The best overview is from the road across the valley on the way in, with the whole complex along its ridge and the mountains behind. Inside, the courtyard framed by the prayer hall and the rows of prayer wheels near the gate make the strongest frames. Photography rules inside the prayer hall and museum can differ, so look for signs or ask a monk.

Visiting well

Come for morning prayers if you can, when chanting fills the hall. Walk clockwise, remove shoes before entering the prayer hall, and keep quiet. Plan at least two hours, more if you want the museum and a slow walk round the monks' lanes. It is about 2 km above the market, a steep walk or a short taxi ride.

Continue to the Tawang War Memorial on the way back down.
