Local tips

Visit the museum halls first; they make the rest of the Tawang drive make sense.

Stay for the evening sound-and-light show and check that day's start time in town.

Bring a warm layer for the show, as evenings get cold quickly.

Walk to the edge of the grounds for a wide view over the town and monastery.

Keep your voice low; this is a place of remembrance, not just a viewpoint.

Ask before photographing any soldiers on duty here.

Combine it with the monastery, which is a short drive away.

A memorial in the shape of a stupa

The Tawang War Memorial honours the Indian soldiers who died in the 1962 war with China, much of which was fought in this district. It is built as a white and yellow Buddhist stupa about 40 feet tall, known locally as Namgyal Chorten, so it sits naturally in a Monpa town. The names of the fallen are listed on black granite panels.

What is inside

Two halls hold photographs, maps, letters, weapons and personal items from the war. They explain how the battles unfolded along the passes and ridges you will drive through, including the stand at what is now Jaswantgarh. It is sobering, and it makes the landscape around Tawang read differently.

The light and sound show

A sound-and-light show in the evening tells the story of the war against the backdrop of the stupa. It usually starts around dusk and lasts about half an hour. Timings can change with the season, so check in town on the day.

Getting the photograph

The stupa photographs best from the lawn in front, straight on, with the prayer flags and the mountains behind. From the edge of the grounds you also get a wide view over Tawang town and the monastery on its ridge.

Visiting well

The memorial is about 1 km from the town centre and is easy to combine with the Tawang Monastery. It is maintained by the army. Treat it as a place of remembrance: keep your voice low and ask before photographing soldiers on duty.
