A capital outside Tirupati

Chandragiri Fort is about 12 km west of Tirupati. The fort, with its moat and bastions, dates from about 1000 AD, and came under the Vijayanagara kings in 1367. When Penukonda was attacked, the Vijayanagara court moved its capital here. Tradition says Krishnadevaraya stayed at the fort before his coronation. The fort passed to Golconda in 1646 and later to Mysore, and declined after 1792. It is a Monument of National Importance.

A deal that made Madras

In 1639, the Vijayanagara king Sriranga Raya granted the British the land for Fort St George. The grant, signed at Chandragiri, led to the city of Madras, now Chennai.

The Raja Mahal

The two-storey palace is the fort's showpiece. It was built of stone, brick and lime mortar, with no timber, and its crowning towers borrow from temple architecture. It is now a museum. The Rani Mahal nearby has a flat roof and was probably also used as commanders' quarters. The grounds hold the ruins of several temples.

Sound-and-light show

An evening sound-and-light show tells the story of the fort and the Vijayanagara kings. It is usually held in Telugu and English, but timings and languages change with the season, so check at the gate.

Visiting

The fort is usually closed on Fridays. Come in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat. Carry water and a hat; there is little shade in the grounds. The fort is rarely crowded and makes a quiet half-day away from the temples.
