Best Photo Spots in Tirupati

Photography in Tirupati is shaped by one rule: phones and cameras stay out of the Tirumala queue and temple. Plan your temple photo for before or after darshan, and spend the rest of your camera time on the arch, the falls and the fort.

Tirumala, from the outside

The Sri Venkateswara Temple cannot be photographed inside, and your phone has to be deposited before you join the queue. That means the only temple photo you will take is from the mada streets, the four broad streets around the temple. Take it on the way in, before you hand over your phone, or come back after darshan. The Maha Dwaram, the main gateway tower, faces the open area where pilgrims break coconuts and light camphor, and that is where the full front of the temple is visible. TTD has warned that it will take action against people filming reels at the temple and on the mada streets, so keep it to quick, quiet photos.

The rock arch

Silathoranam is a natural quartzite arch about 1 km from the temple, set inside a small garden. It is about 8 metres wide and 3 metres high, so a person standing beneath it gives the scale. Early morning and late afternoon light bring out the layers in the rock.

Kapila Theertham

At Kapila Theertham a stream drops off the cliff into the temple tank. It is only worth a trip for the fall after heavy rain, which in Tirupati mostly means October to December. In the dry months it can be a trickle.

Temples in town

The seven-storey gopuram of the Govindaraja Swamy Temple rises over the town centre, and the lanes around it are busy with flower and brass stalls. Photograph the tower from the street; ask before taking pictures inside.

Chandragiri Fort

Chandragiri Fort is the one place here built for looking at rather than for worship. The Raja Mahal palace stands in open grounds with the rocky hill behind it. The fort is usually closed on Fridays.

Light and heat

From March to June the stone and the courtyards get very hot and the light turns flat by late morning. Shoot early. In the northeast monsoon, from October to December, cloud and rain come and go, and the hills turn green.

Questions

Tirupati — FAQ

Can I take photos inside the Tirumala temple?

No. Phones and cameras are not allowed in the queue complex or the temple. You can photograph the temple front from the mada streets before or after darshan.

Where is the best place to photograph the Tirumala temple?

The open area in front of the Maha Dwaram, where pilgrims break coconuts, gives the widest view of the temple front. Keep it respectful: TTD watches for people filming reels.

When does the Kapila Theertham waterfall flow?

It runs strongly after heavy rain, mostly in October to December when the northeast monsoon reaches Tirupati. In the dry months, from about February to May, it can almost stop.
