The temple the town grew around

The Sri Govindaraja Swamy Temple stands in the heart of Tirupati, a short walk from the railway station. It was consecrated in 1130 by the teacher Ramanuja, though some structures inside are older. The village at the foot of the hill was moved here, and the town grew around the temple. It is run by TTD.

The deity

Govindaraja is a form of Vishnu, shown lying in a reclining pose, with his consorts Sridevi and Bhudevi at his feet. Some texts describe him as the elder brother of Venkateswara. Before him, Parthasarathy was the main deity, and his shrine is still important here, as is the shrine of Kalyana Venkateswara.

The gopuram

The east gateway tower is about 50 metres high and seven storeys tall. It was built by a local chieftain, Matla Anantaraja, and the passage walls carry carvings of Ramayana scenes and of the chieftain and his three wives. Behind it are two enclosures, one inside the other, with shrines to Pundarikavalli, Andal, Krishna and the Alvar saints.

Why go

No booking is needed, so this is the temple to see while you wait for a Tirumala slot or after an early train. It is busy in the mornings and evenings. Shoes are left at the stand outside, and modest dress is expected.

Around the temple

The streets around the temple are Tirupati's old bazaar, with flower sellers, brass lamps, pooja items and cloth shops where you can buy a dhoti or saree for Tirumala. Tiffin places nearby serve breakfast from early morning.
