Temple in Tirupati
Sri Venkateswara Temple, Tirumala
Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh
The busiest temple in India, on the hill above Tirupati. Almost nothing here works by turning up: which queue you join is decided before you arrive, and it is the single thing that determines whether the visit takes two hours or most of a day.

- Entry
Non-Hindus are asked to sign a declaration of faith in Venkateswara. The form is available at the Vaikuntham queue complex, and can be completed online with a darshan booking.
- Footwear
Removed well before the temple, at stands near the queue complex. The walk across hot stone in the middle of the day is longer than it looks.
- Access
The temple makes provision for physically disabled and elderly pilgrims, and Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams publish their own arrangements for it. Confirm the current provisions and booking route directly with TTD rather than through a third party. The hill location, the long walk from the queue complex and the barefoot stretch across hot stone are the main physical constraints, so an early morning or late afternoon visit is materially easier than midday.
- Prasadam
The temple manages an 'Anna Prasadam' service for pilgrims.

Darshan options
- The temple offers Sarva Darshan, a free entry system where pilgrims wait in the Vaikuntam Queue Complex
- On normal days, this is available for 18 hours, increasing to 20 hours on peak days

What to wear
Traditional dress is required, not merely preferred. Dhoti with angavastram or full-length trousers and a shirt for men; saree, half-saree or salwar kameez covering the legs for women.
Phones and cameras
Mobile phones and cameras are restricted in the sanctum area and the queue complex, and photography inside the temple is prohibited. Because all darshan routes pass through the Vaikuntam Queue Complex with security screening, travel with as few electronics as possible and use the designated deposit facilities rather than carrying devices you will have to surrender.

Practicalities
The things that go wrong
Book through official channels, and treat anyone promising a guaranteed slot as a warning sign.
What to watch for
- Promising that a paid ticket gives longer or closer darshan
- The actual darshan is 30 to 60 seconds and is identical whether you paid Rs300 or queued free for eighteen hours
- The fee buys a shorter queue and nothing else
- Offering to arrange the non-Hindu declaration of faith for a fee
- The form is free, available at the Vaikuntham Queue Complex, and can be completed online with a darshan booking
- Anyone claiming traditional dress is optional or that shorts will be permitted
- Traditional dress is required and enforced, and there is no wrap or loan system - travellers in casual western dress are turned away
General guidance
Planning the visit
Customary practice and what Tirupati's climate means for a barefoot visit — not rules posted at this temple. Anything specific to Sri Venkateswara Temple, Tirumala is above.
The queue is the ritual
Vaishnava temples in India are usually organised around a moving darshan queue rather than time spent in front of the deity. Expect to keep walking, and expect the view of the sanctum to be brief — that is the intended experience, not a rushed one.
Come in winter
Winter is when Tirupati is most comfortable to walk around, which matters here because a temple visit is done on foot and barefoot. Locally the window is given as september to march.
Stone gets hot — go early
You will be barefoot from the shoe rack onwards, often across an open courtyard. Between late morning and mid-afternoon in the hot months that stone is genuinely painful to stand on. Socks help, and are permitted almost everywhere shoes are not.
Arriving by train
Tirupati has a railway station, and auto-rickshaws wait outside it. Agree the fare or use a meter before you set off, and expect to be dropped a short walk from the temple rather than at its door.

Sri Venkateswara Temple, Tirumala
Tirumala is the busiest temple in India, on the hill above Tirupati. It is routinely described as the most-visited religious site in the world, and the numbers behave like it.
Almost nothing here works by turning up. Which queue you join is decided before you arrive, and that single decision determines whether the visit takes two hours or most of a day. Everything else about Tirumala follows from it.
⏱️ The two queues — and the part nobody tells you
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free | ₹300 per person |
| Booking | On-site token at the counter | Online in advance, tirupatibalaji.ap.gov.in |
| Typical wait | 3–8 hours (up to 18–24 on the busiest days) | 1–4 hours |
| Time slot | No fixed slot | Fixed date and slot |
| Actual darshan inside | 30–60 seconds | 30–60 seconds |
Read that last row again, because it is the thing that reframes the whole visit: the darshan itself is identical in both queues and lasts thirty to sixty seconds.
🎟️ The 2024 change, and why old advice is wrong
- TTD (Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams) now releases the general quota on its own website, around three months ahead.
- The free Slotted Sarva Darshan (SSD) token is now the standard route for most pilgrims.
- Paid sevas — Suprabhata, Archana and others — continue normally and are a separate thing from darshan tickets.
So any guide, agent or package describing a bundled ₹300 quota is describing a system that no longer exists. Book through TTD's own site.
🕒 How the SED slot actually works
This is where people lose money:
- You are given a window, for example 6:00 AM to 8:00 AM.
- You must reach the SED counter at least two hours before that window, where your booking and ID are verified before you join the queue.
- Arriving late can forfeit your slot with no refund.
- The slot date cannot be changed.
Choose a slot that comfortably fits your train arrival and hotel check-in. The two-hours-early requirement is the detail most often missed, and it means an 8:00 AM slot requires you at the counter by 6:00 AM.
🏔️ The Vaikuntam Queue Complex
Both free and paid pilgrims pass through the Vaikuntam Queue Complex, the vast holding and processing facility that manages the flow up the hill. It is a substantial building in its own right, with amenities, and it is where much of the waiting actually happens rather than on the path.
Footwear is removed well before the temple, at stands near the queue complex. The existing guidance on this page is the honest version: the walk across hot stone in the middle of the day is longer than it looks. That is worth planning for — it is not a short barefoot hop, and in the Andhra heat the stone is punishing.
🙏 The declaration of faith
Non-Hindus are asked to sign a declaration of faith in Venkateswara. The form is available at the Vaikuntham Queue Complex and can be completed online with a darshan booking.
This is a genuine access provision rather than a prohibition — Tirumala does not exclude non-Hindus, but it does ask them to make a declaration. Complete it in advance online rather than at the counter, which saves time in a process where time is the scarce resource.
👘 Dress code — required, not preferred
Traditional dress is required, not merely preferred:
- Men: dhoti with angavastram, or full-length trousers and a shirt
- Women: saree, half-saree, or salwar kameez covering the legs
This is enforced. Western casual dress — shorts, sleeveless tops, short skirts — will result in being turned away, and there is no wrap or loan system of the kind Akshardham offers. Arrive correctly dressed or do not plan on entering.
🍬 The laddu
Tirumala's Srivari Laddu is the temple's famous prasadam and is one of the most recognisable religious food items in India — a large, dense, ghee-rich sweet sold at counters within the complex.
Separately, the temple runs an Anna Prasadam service — free meals for pilgrims — which is a substantial operation given the volumes and is one of the ways Tirumala handles feeding tens of thousands of people daily.
🕉️ Timings
The temple opens around 2:30 AM, and runs an extraordinary daily cycle of sevas from the pre-dawn Suprabhata (the ritual waking of the deity) through the day to the night Ekanta Seva (putting the deity to sleep). Tirumala is effectively never closed, though darshan is paused during specific sevas.
The Suprabhata seva at around 3:00 AM is the most sought-after and is booked separately as a paid seva, not as darshan.
♿ Access
The hill itself is the constraint. Tirumala is at altitude above Tirupati, reached by road or by the footpath climb with its stepped ghat road, and the queue complex involves a great deal of standing and walking. The barefoot stretch across hot stone is a real difficulty in summer.
🌸 Vaikunta Ekadashi
Vaikunta Ekadashi in December is Tirumala's greatest festival, when the Vaikunta Dwaram — the gateway to Vishnu's abode — is opened, and pilgrim numbers reach their annual peak.
How it works in 2026, because it changes the ticketing:
- 20–22 December: Vaikunta Dwara Darshan by free e-DIP token booked online
- 23–29 December: entry via the free Sarva Darshan queue, no token needed
So the festival has its own token system on its peak days. Anyone planning a December visit must understand which of the three routes applies on which date.
Brahmotsavam in September or October is the other major annual festival, with processions of the deity on different vahanas (mounts) around the temple.
⚠️ Practical notes
- Decide the queue question first. It determines everything else.
- Book SED through TTD's own website about three months ahead, and be at the counter two hours before your slot or lose it without refund.
- The free SSD token is now the standard route for most pilgrims — the old bundled ₹300 quota was withdrawn in December 2024.
- Dress traditionally or do not plan on entering. There is no wrap system.
- Complete the declaration of faith online if it applies to you.
- Go early or late, not in the middle of the day — the barefoot walk across hot stone is the reason.
- Stay overnight on the hill rather than commuting from Tirupati if you are taking the free queue; an 18-hour wait does not fit inside a day trip.
Last verified: 2026. The December 2024 withdrawal of the bundled Rs300 special-entry quota is documented, as is TTD releasing the general quota on its own website around three months ahead. SED wait times are published as both 1-2 and 2-4 hours, Sarva Darshan as both 3-8 and 18-24 hours on busy days, and whether SED includes two laddus conflicts between sources - all are given rather than resolved. The 30-60 second darshan being identical in both queues is consistent across sources and is the most important fact on this page.
