Temples in Tirupati
Tirupati is a set of temples, not just one. Tirumala takes planning; the temples in town are walk-in and fill the time around it.
Sri Venkateswara Temple, Tirumala
The main temple stands on the hill above town and is dedicated to Venkateswara, a form of Vishnu. Everything runs through the Vaikuntam Queue Complex: the free Sarva Darshan queue, the Divya Darshan tokens given to pilgrims who walk up, and the paid Special Entry slots booked online. Phones and cameras are not allowed inside. The dress code is enforced, non-Hindus sign a declaration of faith, and the laddu is collected after darshan. By tradition, pilgrims first visit the small Bhu Varaha Swamy temple on the north side of the temple tank. More in the Tirumala guide.
Sri Govindaraja Swamy Temple
In the town centre, near the railway station. The temple was consecrated in 1130 by the teacher Ramanuja, and the town grew around it. Govindaraja, another form of Vishnu, lies in a reclining pose. No booking is needed, which makes it the easy temple to visit while waiting for a Tirumala slot. Govindaraja guide.
Kapila Theertham
A Shiva temple at the mouth of a cave at the foot of the hills, near Alipiri. Shiva is worshipped here as Kapileswara, and a waterfall drops into the temple tank after rain. Kapila Theertham guide.
Sri Padmavathi Ammavari Temple, Tiruchanur
About 5 km from town, dedicated to Padmavathi, the consort of Venkateswara. Many pilgrims come here after the hill, as the visit that completes the Tirumala pilgrimage. Its own Karthika Brahmotsavam runs from 5 to 14 December in 2026.
Gangamma temple, Tatayyagunta
The shrine of Gangamma, the village goddess of Tirupati. Its week-long Ganga Jatara, usually in May, is the town's own festival.
