What to Wear in Tirupati

Tirumala checks what you wear at the entry points and sends people back for the wrong clothes. Pack for the dress code first and the weather second.

The dress code at Tirumala

Traditional dress is required for darshan, not just preferred. Men wear a dhoti with an upper cloth, or full-length trousers with a shirt. Women wear a saree, a half-saree (langa voni) or a salwar kameez with a dupatta. Jeans, shorts, sleeveless tops and T-shirts are turned away. The rule applies to foreign visitors in the same way.

For men

A white or cream cotton dhoti with a kurta or an angavastram (a cloth draped over the shoulder) is the most common choice, and it is cool in a long queue. If you have never tied a dhoti, choose a ready-to-wear one with a waistband, sold in the shops around town. Plain trousers and a collared shirt also meet the rule.

For women

A cotton or silk saree is the classic choice for darshan. Many families dress in Kanchipuram silk for a special visit. A salwar kameez with a dupatta is just as acceptable and far easier during hours of standing and walking. Pick fabrics that breathe; the queue complex gets warm when it is full.

Shoes and the footpath

Shoes come off well before the temple, and the stone underfoot can be hot in the middle of the day. Wear sandals you can slip off and on quickly. If you are walking up the Alipiri or Srivari Mettu footpath, wear proper trainers and carry water. Some pilgrims climb barefoot as a vow, but nobody expects a visitor to.

Weather

Tirupati town is warm most of the year and very hot in April and May, so loose cotton and a hat are enough for sightseeing. Tirumala sits higher and is noticeably cooler on winter mornings, from December to February, when a light shawl helps. From October to December, pack an umbrella for the northeast monsoon rain.

Around town

Govindaraja, Kapila Theertham and Tiruchanur expect modest clothes too: covered shoulders and knees. For Chandragiri Fort, comfortable walking clothes and a hat are fine.
