Local tips
Go early in the morning or late in the afternoon, as the rock gets very hot at midday.
Leave your footwear at the counter at the bottom and climb barefoot.
Wear socks on hot days if the stone feels too warm.
Carry water, as the climb takes most people 20–30 minutes.
Take breaks on the landings, as some sections are steep.
Do not take photos near the shrines, and check the camera rules at the entrance.
Explore the busy bazaar streets at the foot of the rock after your climb.
About the Rockfort Temple
The Rockfort is a huge rock that rises about 83 m above the old town of Trichy, close to the Cauvery. A long climb of rock-cut steps, usually given as 437, leads up through the rock, past the Thayumanaswamy Temple dedicated to Shiva, to the small Ucchi Pillayar Temple dedicated to Ganesha on the summit. The rock also has old rock-cut cave shrines from the Pallava and Pandya periods.
The view from the top is the reason many people make the climb. You can see the whole city, the Cauvery and, on clear days, the gopurams of Srirangam across the river. The climb is barefoot, so go early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when the stone is cooler.
