About the Ranganathaswamy Temple

The Ranganathaswamy Temple stands on Srirangam, an island between the Cauvery and the Kollidam rivers on the northern edge of Trichy. It is dedicated to Vishnu as Ranganatha, reclining on the serpent Adisesha, and it is one of the largest functioning Hindu temples in the world. Seven concentric walls enclose the temple and the streets of the town, and 21 gopurams rise above them, led by the Rajagopuram at about 73 m.

The outer streets are full of houses, shops and eateries, so you walk through a living town before you reach the inner courtyards. Non-Hindus can visit the outer areas but are not allowed into the inner sanctum. A ticketed rooftop viewpoint inside gives a view over several gopurams, and the temple's biggest festival, Vaikunta Ekadasi, falls around December–January.
