About the City Palace

The City Palace runs along the east bank of Lake Pichola and is the largest palace complex in Rajasthan. Work began in 1559 under Maharana Udai Singh II, the founder of Udaipur, and later rulers kept adding to it for about 400 years. The result is a long line of towers, domes and balconies, joined inside by a maze of courtyards, narrow passages and staircases.

Much of the palace is now a museum, with mirror-work rooms, peacock mosaics, miniature paintings and balconies that look straight over the lake. Part of the complex is still used by the former royal family. The jetty for Lake Pichola boat rides is inside the grounds, so it is easy to combine a palace visit with an afternoon or sunset boat trip.
