About Jagdish Temple
Jagdish Temple stands in the middle of Udaipur's old city, a short walk from the City Palace. It was built in 1651 by Maharana Jagat Singh I and is dedicated to Lord Vishnu as Jagannath, the Lord of the Universe. It is the largest temple in the city and is still in daily worship.
A flight of marble steps, guarded by two stone elephants, leads up from the street to the temple. The tall tower and outer walls are covered in carvings of gods, dancers, elephants and horsemen, and a bronze figure of Garuda, Vishnu's mount, faces the shrine. Morning and evening aarti bring locals in with bells and songs.
