Temples in Udupi
Udupi grew up around its temples, and they are still the centre of the town. The Sri Krishna Matha, founded by Madhvacharya in the 13th century, stands on Car Street next to two older Shiva temples and the eight monasteries that take turns to run it.
What makes a visit here different is that you see Krishna through a window rather than face to face. Remember that these are busy places of worship with a strict dress code, so dress modestly and follow the rules at the gate.
Famous Temples in Udupi
Sri Krishna Matha is the main temple, dedicated to Krishna as a child. Devotees have darshan through the Navagraha Kindi, a silver-plated window with nine openings. On the outer west wall is the Kanakana Kindi, a small window linked to the poet-saint Kanakadasa, who, the story goes, was refused entry and saw Krishna turn to face him through the wall. The temple also runs a kitchen that feeds pilgrims every day.
Anantheshwara Temple, on Car Street, is one of the oldest temples in the region and is believed to date from around the 8th century. It is dedicated to Shiva.
Chandramouleeshwara Temple, next to it, is another Shiva temple. The heads of the eight mathas traditionally visit it and the Anantheshwara Temple after their darshan of Krishna.
The Ashta Mathas, the eight monasteries founded by Madhvacharya, line Car Street. Each runs the Krishna Matha for two years in turn.
