Best time to visit Ujjain

The best time to visit Ujjain is from October to March, when days are warm and sunny and the mornings are cool. It is the most comfortable time for early starts at Mahakaleshwar and long walks between the temples and ghats.

April to June is very hot, with May afternoons often above 40 °C, and the monsoon from July to September brings heavy showers and humid days. In Ujjain the religious calendar matters as much as the weather, so check festival dates before you book: Shravan, Mahashivratri and New Year bring some of the biggest crowds of the year.

Best Month to Visit Ujjain

October and November

The monsoon has usually ended, and the days are warm but pleasant. Diwali usually falls in these months and the annual Kartik Mela fair is held around this time, so the city can be busy around festival dates.

December to February

These are the coolest and most comfortable months. Days are sunny and mild, while nights and early mornings often drop below 10 °C, so bring a warm layer for the pre-dawn Bhasma Aarti. The last week of December and the first days of January are extremely busy at Mahakaleshwar, and Mahashivratri, one of the biggest days of the year in Ujjain, usually falls in February or March.

March

Days get warmer, but mornings and evenings are still comfortable. Holi usually falls in March and brings colour to the streets, and it is a good month for sightseeing before the heat arrives.

April to June

This is the hottest time of year, with May afternoons often above 40 °C. Visit temples at dawn and after sunset, rest in the middle of the day and drink plenty of water. In 2028, this is also when the Simhastha Kumbh is expected to be held.

July to September

The monsoon brings heavy showers, humid days and greener surroundings, and July is usually the wettest month. Shravan, usually in July and August, is one of the busiest times at Mahakaleshwar, with long queues on Mondays and the Mahakal Sawari procession through the city.

When Is Ujjain Most Crowded?

Ujjain is busiest during Shravan (July–August), on Mahashivratri, on Nag Panchami and over New Year, when huge numbers of pilgrims come to Mahakaleshwar. Around New Year, the temple has even paused Bhasma Aarti bookings and switched to a moving darshan to manage the crowds. Mondays and long weekends are busy all year.

The biggest crowds of all come with the Simhastha Kumbh, held every 12 years. The next one is expected from late March to late May 2028, when rooms will be hard to find, so book very early or plan your trip around it. For a quieter visit, come on a weekday between October and February, avoid festival dates and reach the temples early in the morning.
