About Kal Bhairav Temple
Kal Bhairav Temple stands in the Bhairavgarh area in the north of Ujjain, on the banks of the Shipra. It is dedicated to Kal Bhairav, a fierce form of Shiva who is worshipped as the guardian of the city, and it is one of Ujjain's busiest temples. An earlier shrine here is mentioned in the Avanti Khanda of the Skanda Purana, and the present building shows Maratha influence, with faint traces of old Malwa-style paintings on its walls.
The temple is best known for its offering of liquor, which comes from the tantric traditions linked with Bhairav worship. A priest pours the liquor into a saucer and holds it to the idol's lips, and the liquid appears to vanish. Since April 2025, liquor sales have been banned within Ujjain's municipal limits, and the counters that used to stand outside the temple have closed. The temple keeps its own stock for the daily offerings, and devotees have been told to bring liquor bought outside the city limits if they wish to offer it.
