About Mahakaleshwar Temple

Mahakaleshwar Temple is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Shiva and the spiritual centre of Ujjain. Its lingam is believed to be swayambhu, or self-manifested, and it faces south, a feature found only here among the twelve Jyotirlingas. The temple rises over five levels beside the Rudra Sagar lake, one of them underground. A shrine of Omkareshwar sits above the main sanctum, and the Nagchandreshwar shrine on the third floor opens only on Nag Panchami. The old temple was destroyed by Iltutmish in the 1230s and rebuilt under Maratha rule in the 18th century.

The temple is famous for the Bhasma Aarti, performed before dawn, when the lingam is adorned with sacred ash. A seat at the aarti needs an online booking, and traditional dress is expected. Since 2022, the temple has also had Mahakal Lok, a corridor of more than 900 m around the Rudra Sagar with 108 pillars and around 200 statues and murals telling stories of Shiva. Phones are not allowed inside the temple premises, so leave yours at a locker counter, but you can use it in Mahakal Lok.
