About Sandipani Ashram

Sandipani Ashram is the place where, according to tradition, Krishna, his brother Balarama and their friend Sudama studied under the sage Sandipani. In ancient times Ujjain was a well-known centre of learning, and the ashram is an important stop for devotees of Krishna. The area around it is called Ankpat, and local belief says this is where Krishna washed his writing slate.

Inside the ashram you can see the Gomti Kund, a tank mentioned in the Puranas that once supplied the ashram with water, and a stone carved with the numbers 1 to 100, which are believed to have been written by Guru Sandipani. An old statue of Nandi near the tank dates from the Shunga period, and followers of the Vallabh sect honour the site as one of the 84 seats of Vallabhacharya. It is much quieter than the temples in the centre of town.
