About Champaner-Pavagadh

Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park lies about 50 km east of Vadodara and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004. Sultan Mahmud Begada captured the hill fort of Pavagadh in 1484 and built a new capital at its foot. Its mosques, walls, gates and stepwells still stand across a wide area.

The highlight is the Jama Masjid, completed in 1513, with two tall minarets, carved stone windows and a prayer hall topped with domes. Above the ruins, Pavagadh hill is home to the Kalika Mata Temple, reached by road, ropeway and a climb on foot. Seeing both the monuments and the hill makes a full day out from Vadodara.
