Best time to visit Varkala
The best time to visit Varkala is from October to March, when the weather is dry, the sea is calmer and the sunsets from the cliff are at their most reliable. December and January are the busiest weeks, while October, November and March are quieter.
April and May are hot and sticky. The monsoon, from June to September, brings heavy rain and rough seas, and swimming is unsafe for most of it. The cliff is green and dramatic in the rain, but many cafés close and the paths near the edge get slippery.

October and November
The rain fades, the coast is still green and the cliff cafés reopen for the season. Seas can be rough in early October, so check with the lifeguards before you swim. A good time for a quiet trip.
December to February
This is peak season, with sunny days, calm water and warm evenings. Christmas and New Year are the busiest weeks, and the Sivagiri pilgrimage from 30 December to 1 January fills the town. Book early for this period.
March
The weather stays dry but grows hotter and more humid. The ten-day Arattu festival at the Janardanaswamy Temple usually falls in March or April.
April and May
The hottest months, with high humidity. Mornings and evenings are the only comfortable times to be outside, and pre-monsoon showers often start in May.
June to September
The monsoon brings heavy rain, strong winds and rough seas. Swimming is unsafe for most of this time, many cliff cafés close, and heavy rain has caused parts of the cliff to crumble. It is a quiet, green time for yoga or Ayurveda stays, but not a beach holiday. Karkidaka Vavu, in July or August, and Onam, in August or September, bring local crowds.
When Is Varkala Most Crowded?
Varkala is busiest from mid-December to early January, when Christmas, New Year and the Sivagiri pilgrimage overlap. Weekends through the dry season also bring day-trippers from Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam.
For a quieter trip, visit in November or March, and walk the cliff path in the early morning, before the cafés open.
