About Janardanaswamy Temple
The Janardanaswamy Temple stands on a rise above Papanasam Beach and is dedicated to Vishnu as Janardana. It is believed to be around 2,000 years old and is one of the most important Vishnu temples in Kerala. Its old bell, a gift from a Dutch sea captain according to local legend, is one of its best-known features.
The temple is closely tied to the beach below. Pilgrims bathe at Papanasam and perform rites for their ancestors before climbing up to pray. Every year in March or April, the ten-day Arattu festival brings elephant processions and Kathakali to the temple.
