About Sivagiri Mutt
Sivagiri Mutt sits on a small hill about 3 km inland from Varkala Cliff. It was founded by Sree Narayana Guru, a philosopher and social reformer who campaigned against caste discrimination in Kerala in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His samadhi, or resting place, is here, in a white building on the hilltop.
The mutt is the headquarters of the Sree Narayana Dharma Sangham and a major pilgrimage centre. It is calm for most of the year, but from 30 December to 1 January it fills with devotees in yellow for the annual Sivagiri pilgrimage.
