About Varkala Beach (Papanasam)
Varkala Beach runs along the foot of the red laterite cliff. Its southern end, below the Janardanaswamy Temple, is known as Papanasam, which means "destroyer of sins". Hindus believe a dip here washes away sins, and families come at dawn to perform bali, rites for their ancestors. On Karkidaka Vavu, in July or August, thousands gather on the sand.
By afternoon the beach changes into a place for swimming, surfing lessons and sunset walks, with the cliff and its cafés rising behind. Small springs trickle out of the cliff face, and many people believe the water is good for health.
